Blog Post #5: Reflecting on the Research Project Experience

Completing this research project has been a truly enriching experience for me. A few positive experiences I gained from doing the research project are the ability to work as a team, improved writing ability, time management, building interpersonal relationships and doing research. All of these learning experiences I have acquired over this period definitely benefited me in many ways.

The three of us maintained a harmonious working relationship which was very important in getting the project completed on time. During the course of this project, I have also acquired knowledge with regards on research reports; how surveys were expected to be carried out, brain storming of ideas behind the basis of each question, doing research for our project topic which was rather time-consuming, how to go about analyzing the survey results, formality of language used in transmittal letter and employing the APA style for listing of references.

Problems encountered would be the tight schedule of the project, and the three of us usually have to stay back after our ES2007S class to meet up for discussion. Time is probably the most valuable asset available to people and planning is necessary to achieve success in time management. From this research project, I had realised the importance of time management and working as a team. As we were faced with a tight timetable in less than a month to conduct an online survey, complete and compile the whole report, planning and pacing our workflow became important. Another problem faced is that there were no respondents from the Faculties of Law and Medicine through the online survey. Therefore, questionnaire forms were handed out at the Law Canteen and at NUH eateries to get the required number.

Team work enables us to cope with the escalating volume of the project as each person volunteered to do the different components of the project report. With careful planning, self-discipline and ability to work together as a team, we managed to keep up with the fast pace. Pondering if this report will to be completed by me alone, I would have had much difficulty to meet the deadline, much less to guarantee the quality of the work.

The principles of communication that I would like to employ in the upcoming oral presentation would be to make my presentation concise so as to avoid ambiguity and confusion to my audience, the appropriate use of tone and perhaps formal tone for the presentation. I would like to avoid NVC such as lack of eye contact with my audience.

Hi Sheral,

I agree with you that the tight schedule of the project puts a strain on the whole group. Thus, being able to communicate well within the group enables the team to be more effective and for work to be assigned properly.

I have learnt much from this project too, and I feel that these transferable skills will be very useful when we start on our first job when we graduate.

Lastly, creating friendships while working on this project is the most invaluable experience I've gained.

Hi Xiao Ting,

My experience has been very pleasant with many thanks to Sherine and you :)

I am glad that we were able to iron out the questions that we all had with one another. As such, our doubts were all clarified, allowing us to progress with our report-writing. This has to be credited to our teamwork, openness with and trust in one another.

Being the active listener in our group, you have pointed out the flaws in the fallible arguments that I rattled off without much thought. You also give much thought to each argument and with this, you have contributed much to substantiating many argument points with adequate examples.

Meeting after ES2007S lessons was perhaps the most convenient for us, and I am glad things thusfar have been efficient for us. I am proud to say that the three of us make a great team. Let's keep it up for the upcoming presentation!

Cheers,
Xueli

Hi Sheral,

I agree that a strict time management is important to meet the tight deadlines of the project. In addition, careful planning is also essential to smooth the work flow. It sounds like your group has tried various ways in order to collect a sample that consists of all the faculties in NUS. Being one of the few who has read your report, I can see your group’s effort in constructing a persuasive proposal. Besides, your group has also done a good job in researching which makes the report even more convincing.

This project has certainly given a chance to practise the skills that we have learnt in class, such as writing minutes and citing of references using APA style. It is good that three of you have maintained a good working relationship. Hope you also had an enjoyable experience working with your teammates.

All the best for your next team project-oral presentation!

Hi Sheral,

I personally find that time constraint is indeed a main problem faced by all groups not only your groups. Managing the time well and taking initiative among all the group members is very crucial too. Hence, extremely driven individuals is indeed an important factor to get projects on-going, especially under such a tight schedule where everyone is so busy off their mid-term exams and other assignments in hand. On top of that, all of your team mates have proven effective communication throughout the duration of about one month or so.

Holding meetings online more often, can be helps to keep in touch with each and everyone in the project team the latest event of the project. Though there’s problem faced like planning the common time for everyone to be online, but it’s an alternate way only. Catching up with each other, finding out how they are doing is very important indeed. For example, in my case, I have to find out if my team mates is having problem to take out some time to finish certain parts of the project. If he can’t have the luxury of time, I can lend a helping hand too.

Cheers,
Wendy
